Food insecurity and homelessness are one in the same for many people in Southern California.
We are known for our food security programs however, we have also been active in systemic support for the homeless in our community.
Food insecurity and homelessness are one in the same for many people in Southern California. The ever-increasing cost of living leaves low-income households lacking the funds to stay housed, pay bills and have food. In 2025, 1 in 4 L. A. County households experienced food insecurity, and 47.2% of low-income adults struggled to afford food.
Food insecurity is a major factor for many experiencing homelessness, causing most to live with anxiety and stigma that contributes to deeper mental health issues.
Recent data shows that people experiencing unsheltered homelessness in Los Angeles County averaged 8.3 meals per week.
Our community (SPA 3) has a higher population within the county of unhoused families and a growing number of unhoused older adults.
For these reasons and so many more, SSFL has always strived to provide assistance to our unhoused neighbors. By connecting unhoused people with services beyond food.
We know the importance of keeping people housed and it is why we offer the unique and individual programs we do. We also understand the needs of our unhoused clients and why we are grateful to our municipal neighbors that have allowed us to share homeless service information for the community we serve.
Below are links and information for various cities and county homeless resources.
