Scott DeSmet, Brian McNerney, Jim O'Brien, Vicki Brown and Al Snow. The truck got spruced up with decals not long after it was purchased. Sowing Seeds for Life will soon be truckin’ in style, thanks in part to a $53,000 grant from the Ludwick Family Foundation of Glendora. SSFL volunteer Jim O’Brien of San Dimas, a retired West Covina police officer, did all the leg work and negotiations in acquiring a 2007 Freightliner bobtail truck from Penske Truck Sales. The 26,000-pound vehicle with a 24-foot refrigeration unit will be put in use as soon as it [...]

Tim Grant will be honored at Sowing Seeds for Life’s fifth annual Celebrity Golf Tournament for Charity Oct. 7 at Glendora County Club. Among the celebrities scheduled to appear at the tournament are UCLA football announcers Chris Roberts and Matt Stevens, which is appropriate. Grant is a UCLA alum (class of ’82) and avid fan of the Bruins. One of Tim’s graduation presents was UCLA’s victory over Michigan in the Rose Bowl, the first of four Rose Bowl appearances under Terry Donahue during his tenure as head coach. Donahue had originally agreed to be a part of the tournament, particularly after hearing a fellow [...]

Brian McNerney and Gary Howarth on Fox NFL Sunday set last November. If there is any question of the stature of the Sowing Seeds for Life Celebrity Golf Tournament for Charity, consider this: Vin Scully lent a helping hand. When it comes to sports celebrities in Southern California, they don't get any bigger than Scully. Six nights after getting a five-minute standing ovation from a sold-out crowd at Dodger Stadium, the legendary Dodger announcer welcomed a group of four people into his broadcast booth for a brief meet and greet and photo session. It was Vin Scully Bobblehead Night at Dodger [...]

Sowing Seeds for Life founder  Vicki Brown, who has received numerous regional and local awards for her charity work, was among those receiving an award during a ceremony April 30 at the University of La Verne honoring the school’s ENACTUS team of outstanding business students. The University of La Verne chapter of ENACTUS organization, formerly SIFE, have been a big part of Sowing Seeds for Life in recent years. The group is also heavily involved with Campbell Soup's "Let's Can Hunger" drive. ENACTUS stands for Entrepreneurial Action US, while SIFE was short for Students in Free Enterprise. The name change took [...]

A Tribute to SSFL Supporter Bill Sharman, a Great Friend

Bill Sharman is shown standing with, from left, James Worthy, Bill Russell, Jim Harrick and Jerry West as tournament coordinator Tim Haas pays tribute to this all-star group of celebrities in 2010. The passing of Bill Sharman at the age of 87 on Oct. 25 generated a lot of stories about his accomplishments as an athlete and coach. What I am writing here is personal. He was one of my best friends and undoubtedly the nicest person I have ever known. He was also a big supporter of Sowing Seeds for Life. Twice, he and his wife Joyce [...]
